Sunday 3 Jul BBC2 2100hrs - Coast

Join Nick Crane and the Coast team when they visit the Inner and Outer Hebrides of Scotland and discover how the Royal Air Force has operated the Remote Radar Head (RRH) on the secluded island of Benbecula over the years. Furthermore, go behind the scenes to meet the people and see the technology used to operate the facilities today.

The use of radar made a major contribution to winning the Battle of Britain and the RRH system at Benbecula is part of the holistic radar ‘picture’ used by the RAF to monitor UK airspace around the clock throughout the year. Come and learn how this vital unit provides long-range coverage of the North Atlantic approaches to Scotland and has subsequently played a crucial and enduring role in protecting the UK from aerial attack since World War 2.

Squadron Leader Mark Philipson says, “RRH Benbecula is cut off from the rest of the world in many ways. It is highly remote: blocked by severe weather conditions and only a few transport links to the mainland, and this means a more simplistic existence for its island community.”
