Watch out for 'our' very own WWII WAAF Filterer Officer, Eileen Younghusband, appearing on Eggheads as part of The People’s Book Prize quiz team on Monday, 2nd February on BBC 2 TV at the usual time of 6pm!

Early in 1941, aged just 19 years, Eileen became a Clerk Special Duties in the WAAF.  After a very brief technical training, she was sent as a Filter Plotter to 10 Group, RAF Rudloe Manor.

Within 3 months, she was recommended for promotion to Filterer Officer and sent to RAF Bawdsey, the home of Radar development for further training. Posted to 9 Group, Barton Hall and then again to 10 Group, she covered the first time Operation Aspirin was used against Germany’s Knickebein bombing plan and later was on duty during the Baedeker raids on Bath and Exeter.

Posted later to Fighter Command Headquarters at Bentley Priory, her watch covered the D Day landings and subsequently she received the first Big Ben warning of the V2 rocket to land on Chiswick on the 8th September 1944.
